Filming Poverty

filming poverty

At Elevation Hub our mission to give a voice to people affected by poverty so that they can share their stories all across the world.  Our team has travelled the globe, into the most harrowing and desperate of situations imaginable while trying to capture the reality of what we are witnessing whilst trying to ensure the dignity and honour of the people are always at the forefront of our minds.

It has been the practice of many charities over the years to have a pity-based perspective to film and photography where women and children have been captured in often awful and demeaning conditions.  The “flies-in-the-eyes” approach, as we call it, can not preserve the dignity of those suffering as it simply reinforces outdated visual cliches.

A new approach is needed and whilst humanitarian charities are getting better at providing more positive examples in their media output, more work is needed to ensure the benevolent giver and grateful receiver narrative is broken.

We like to empower people by helping them to tell their story, in their own words with dignified,  nuanced storytelling in its right context.

In our film The Harvest we wanted to let the voices of the people be heard
